3 - Abu Simbel Festival, 21 October 2011

Of the several buildings King Ramses II built, Abu Simbel is considered the most impressive. The Sun Temple has been sitting along the Niles banks since 1250 BC in southern Egypt, carved into the sandstone cliffs facing eastwards.

4 - The Cross Egypt Challenge (14 - 22 OCTOBER, 2011)

The Cross Egypt Challenge is a 9 days endurance scooter ride from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea in the North of Egypt to the temple of Abu Simbel, on the southern borders of Egypt.
A journey of 1700 kilometer on scooters to promote tourism in Egypt.

The Cross Egypt Challenge is a non-profit initiative aiming to promote tourism, alternative sports, and alternative means of transportations in Egypt. It is scheduled to start on October 14th 2011.

10 - World Green Tourism Congress (WGTC)

The first global event in the region dedicated to the investment and development of sustainable tourism, takes place from 22-24 Nov. 2010 at Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre. 11 - Abu Dhabi Art 2010

This November, Abu Dhabi Art 2010 will expand on last year's programme, while following the concept inaugurated in 2009. 14 - Pharaohs Rally, Egypt

15 - Moulid of Abu el-Haggag, Luxor

Two weeks prior to the beginning of Ramadan, the Moulid of Abu el-Haggag celebrates Luxor's patron sheikh with a two-day street festival. Horse races, music, dance and tahtib (stick fights) precede the parading of large boats in the crowded streets.

The parade resembles the solar barque processions of the Pharaonic era; in Islamic symbolism boats represent the quest for spiritual enlightenment (28 - 29 Jul 2010).

17 - Japanese Art Exhibition Opens In Istanbul

Organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, Tokyo National Museum, Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the exhibition introduces the flowers of Japanese art that spans about 5,000 years from Jomon period to Edo period, focuses on Tokyo National Museum's collection including two National Treasures and three Important Cultural Properties

The exhibition will stay open till June 28.

21 - Statues Found at Kom el-Hettan

The Minister of Culture, Farouk Hosni, announced that two red granite statues of King Amenhotep III and of the god Thoth, were unearthed near the Pharaoh's funerary temple at Kom el-Hettan on Luxor's west bank.
The statue of Amenhotep III and Re-Horakhty, found at the site of Kom el-Hetan in Luxor. The discovery was carried out by an Egyptian team from the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA) during routine work reducing the groundwater's level.

 


22 - Sinai International Bowling Tournament (20 - 30 Apr 2010)

The Sinai International Bowling Tournament attracts teams aiming for a strike, and the final US$32,000 prize, to Cairo's International Bowling Center. Not as new as you'd think, it is thought that ancient Egyptians played with stone balls and conical pins.

Bowling in Egypt began during the Pharaonic era, as suggested by the images found on monuments situated in Beni Hasan.

24 - International Nile Song Festival for Children, 27 Jan - 3 Feb 2010

The International Nile Song Festival, at the Cairo International Conference Centre, attracts kids from around 18 countries to compete for generous cash prizes in writing, singing and composing. All genres are allowed, though the songs must be new. There are also several charity concerts and exhibitions. In previous years, the International Nile Song Festival has been organised in two categories, one for children from five to nine years old and the second for ages ten to 15.

26 - The Abu Simbel Sun Festival

The Abu Simbel Sun Festival at Aswan, Egypt is observed twice every year on 22nd Of February and on 22nd of October, the dates that mark the emperor's birthday and his ascension to the throne. On these days, shafts of sunlight enter into the temple and illuminate the statues of the great king Ramses II and the two sun gods Re-Horakhte and Amen-Re seated beside the Theban god Ptah, the god of darkness. 36 - National Committee Meeting

The National Committee for the Return of Stolen Artifacts, headed by Dr. Zahi Hawass, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA), met to discuss the procedures needed to make a formal request for the return of the Bust of Nefertiti now on display at the Neues Museum in Berlin. Dr. Hawass also updated the committee on Egypt’s latest efforts to retrieve other artifacts. A number of ministries and government authorities are represented on the National Committee for the Return of Stolen Artifacts.

 


37 - New Tombs Found at Saqqara

Two large 26th Dynasty tombs have been found in Saqqara by an Egyptian excavation mission from the Supreme Council of Antiquities (SCA). Dr. Zahi Hawass, said that the two newly discovered tombs were found at the Ras El Mudir area at Saqqara, near the entrance point of the archaeological site. He explained that both tombs are cut into the limestone rock of the hill and the first one is the largest yet found at Saqqara. It is composed of a large rock-hewn hall followed by a number of small rooms and corridors.

The archaeological mission from the Austrian Archaeological Institute in Cairo has unearthed a fragment of a seal impression at Tel El-Daba in the Nile delta. It bears cuneiform script in the Akkadian language and dates to the last decades of the Old Babylonian Kingdom.

55 - Cairo International Airport massive development

Cairo International Airport development project is completed. Terminal 3 will begin operating in August 2008 and will welcome more than 11 million passengers a year doubling the current capacity of the other two existing terminals (already representing 9 million passengers). Cairo international airport may undergo additional developments within the forthcoming years. Its capacity could treble then and rise 50 million passengers a year over the next 30 years.

 


56 - Dusit Thani LakeView Cairo Well Underway

Extending its reach to newer horizons, this time to the land of the pharaohs and the pyramids, Dusit International is launching its newest hotel Dusit Thani LakeView Cairo, which opened on 28 May. 57 - Souk El-Fustat is located in Old Cairo

Souk El-Fustat is located in Old Cairo, between the Amr Ibn Al-As mosque, Egypt's first Mosque, the Church Al-Muallaqa, the 'Hanging Church', a church dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the recently restored Ben Ezra synagogue. This souk offers traditional hand-made items like embroidered robes, oriental lamps, wooden toys and fabric dolls. Certain boutiques play host to craftsmen from particular communities, such as the craftsmen of Upper Egypt, or associations like the one for the protection of the environment.

 


58 - Mutual Cultural Bonds between Egypt and Spain

King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia arrived in Egypt on 4th February 2008. They attended the Closing Ceremony held on the occasion of celebrating the 6th Centennial Jubilee of Ibn Khaldun's memorial, the famous pioneer in Sociology. Farouk Hosni , the Minister of Culture gave a speech during the ceremony at Prince Taz Palace , in which he said that there had always been cultural exchange between Egypt and Spain through different means as art exhibitions , concerts and others.

 


59 - First Egyptian individual record in Guinness World Records

For the first time in the Arab world, Mr.Hesham nessim broke Guinness World Records for the fastest vehicle crossing the great sand sea in Egypt .The journey took place on the 5th of March 2009 and it began from the Gilf Kebir plateau and ended at the Siwa Oasis. The distance between the starting point and the final one is 570 kilometers, but the real distance in which the adventurer crossed was 650 kilometers in 5 hours and 33 minutes.

 


60 - A unique event in Abu Simbel

The festival of Abu Simbel, in February, is a fabulous period for those who can visit Abu Simbel and luckily admire in the meantime the incredible sunrise over the temple.
Abu Simbel is a splendid temple built on a strict east - west axis so that the morning sun actually goes through the heart of the temple for 60 meters to reach the innermost sanctuary at dawn, illuminating the statues of Amon, Ramses II and Ra-Horakhty twice a year on Oct. 22nd and Feb. 22nd.

 


61 - Luxor Heritage Center: New Tourist Night at Luxor

Luxor Heritage Center is considered one of the recent touristic establishments in Luxor and includes:
1.Culturama-Cultural panorama: Culturama is a large panoramic display that surrounds the audience in a curved shape.
2.Star Riders: A display of Astrolabe models of machines showing Islamic and Arabic civilization's contribution towards astronomy.
3. Three-dimension shows: A display of selected archeological excavations representing different eras of the Egyptian civilization.

 


62 - Six Senses Spa opened in Port Ghalib

Egypt's first Six Senses Spa has opened at Intercontinental. The Palace Port Ghalib Resort, in Marsa Alam, Egypt. The Six Senses Spa will service the three resorts located at Port Ghalib Resort.
The uniquely designed spa at Port Ghalib occupies 1,700 square metres, comprising sixteen treatment areas including two Thai treatment rooms, and one wet treatment room with classically designed stone beds. The spa includes a sauna, steam room, changing rooms, fully equipped gym, and traditional hammams.
